Oakland Raiders History
On January 30, 1960, the American Football League voted to award Oakland a football team. The team's co-owners were accountable for bring football to Oakland: Ed McGah, Harvey Binns, Wayne Valley, Chet Soda, Robert Osborne, Charles Harney, and Don Blessing. Chet Soda was named the team's general manager.
The innovative team colors were Black, Gold and White they didn't wear Silver and Black until 9/7/63. For a brief period, the new AFL team was recognized as the Senors but by the time the 1960 season started, the Oakland team was identified as the Raiders. Ed Erdelatz was the head coach, Tom Flores and Babe Parilli were the quarterbacks, and a young rookie, Jim Otto, was a lineman. My dad, L.C. Joyner, played defensive back.
Oakland's record for the first three years was miserable at 9-33 and average home audience was only about 11,000. This was all twisted around when Al Davis joined the Raiders in 1963. Oakland went from 1-13 in 1962 to 10-4 in 1963 and Davis was named the AFL Coach of the Year. In 1966, head coach and general manager of the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis became the Commissioner of the American Football League (AFL). Prior to 1966, when the 54,616 capacity Oakland Coliseum was opened, the Raiders played at Kezar Stadium and Candlestick Park in SF and at Frank Youell Fieldin Oakland.
On November 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets game was cut off of TV to begin the film Heidi on NBC. The Raiders got 2 touchdowns in 9 seconds to win the game 43-32 - all of which the TV audience missed. NBC was flooded with calls and the idea of program delay was instituted immediately by the networks. This game has since been known as 'The Heidi Game.'
The Oakland Raiders are the only team to play in the Super Bowl in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The Raiders have won 3 Super Bowls, won/shared 15 Division Championships, played in 12 Championship games, won the American Football League Championship and 4 American Football Conference Championships. Twelve Raiders have been inducted into NFL's Hall of Fame and 5 Raider coaches have been named Coach of the Year.

Oakland Raiders News
Raiders Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) Tom Cable has never been one to delegate authority, instead adding on to his own responsibilities rather than depend on someone else.
That changes at Raiders training camp this year, where Cable, as he has done throughout the offseason will step back and evaluate the whole picture rather than put himself right in the middle of everything.
When the regular season ended, Cable conceded in his wrap-up press conference he may have overextended himself. By the time the Raiders finished a 5-11 season, Cable was not only head coach, but the offensive coordinator, play-caller and de facto offensive line coach, spending time in the trenches attempting to coax more out of his former position group. At the time, it wasn't clear whether Cable was talking to the press as the... NFL Team Reports: AFC West (SportingNews.com) Several times a week, The Trenches will present team reports from Sporting News' 32 NFL correspondents. Change at QB is big one for Raiders (The Canadian Press) NAPA, Calif. - The biggest change for the Oakland Raiders was evident when Jason Campbell walked out of the first huddle as the starting quarterback. First-round pick McClain makes it to 1st practice (AP) While his Raiders teammates were at meetings to start training camp, first-round pick Rolando McClain was waiting in his house in Oakland hoping he'd be able to join them for the first practice. After signing his contract late Wednesday night, McClain made it up to the Raiders' summer home in the wine country to be on the field for the first training camp workout. |
